Winning design for new National Theatre building presented

Faroese architect firm MAP Arkitektar have won the design contest for the new National Theatre set to be located between Tórshavn’s East Harbour and the Kongabrúgvin wharf.

The winners were announced at an official presentation in Tórshavn on September 9th.

The panel of judges agreed that MAP Arkitektars bid stuck out among the submissions in terms of “architectural vision, functionality, integration with the buildings natural surroundings, buildability, cost and with regard to the environment.” 

“The project was chosen as the only winner of the competition inasmuch as it sticks out among the other submissions on all important parameters,” the panel added.

“The proposers have with a bold, tenacious and at the same time playful toss of the head demonstrated their plan, which the panel finds to fit well into the complicated cityscape.”

The panel also noted that the building would stand out as a new Faroese cultural center, and that the building “with is organic ground floor design goes well together with Skansin, and with its stylish terrace it will unite the different sections of the building and create an intriguing and light combination”.

The judges further described the building as “unique, magnificent and humble”.

“In an inspiring way, the proposers manage with convincing ingenuity to show the division of activity and a balanced corelation, both in front of and behind the curtains.”
