The Faroe Islands’ first indoors sports and cultural arena has been completed and officially opened. ‘Við Tjarnir’, an impressive 5,000-square-meter venue that took about two years to build, had its grand opening on Saturday, with a reported attendance of 8,000 people.
Often referred to as the Faroe Arena during the planning and pre-construction period, við Tjarnir represents a major upgrade of the Faroe Islands’ capacity for hosting major indoors events, including at the international level, such as sports events, concerts, conferences, exhibitions and more.
At a total construction cost of 32.4 million EUR, according to CEO Regin W. Dalsgaard, the new building near Hvítanes in the outskirts of Tórshavn features a total floor area of 8,100m² spread over three floors, including a 2,500m² playfield.
The new venue has several events underway in the weeks ahead, including a national handball tournament on February 21st-23rd, a classical music concert on March 1st, a rock concert on March 8th, and an international handball match on March 12th.
“This is the largest, most attractive and most exciting hall ever built in the Faroe Islands,” við Tjarnir chairman Heðin Mortensen noted in his keynote address. “Compared to similar venues in neighboring countries, this one is in a class of its own,” the former Mayor of Tórshavn said.
