For the first time ever, the total population of the Faroe Islands passes 55,000, as per official statistics.
The island nation’s total number of inhabitants amounted to 55,042 as of July 1st, 2025, largely based on net migration.
The population thus grew by 361 persons over a 12-month period, a 0.7-percent year-on-year increase.
Over a 12-year period, the total number of people living on the archipelago has seen a 14.6-percent increase, as the total population totaled just about 48,000 in 2013. The population of the Faroes reached 50,000 for the first time in 2017, according to the statistics bureau.
The latest 12-month period population growth is based on a net migration of 198 persons and a surplus of births to deaths—also known as a natural increase—by 163 persons, Statistics Faroe Islands noted.
