Scandinavian construction company NCC will now finally begin digging the long-awaited sub-sea tunnel between the islands of Streymoy and Sandoy, Faroese media outlets report today.
Drilling of the tunnel will begin tomorrow. NCC will start drilling from the Streymoy side, while drilling from the Sandoy side will commence next summer.
The 10.8 km long road tunnel is expected to open in December 2023, and Faroese authorities estimate that traffic through the tunnel can be around 300-400 cars per day.
There are currently two undersea tunnels in the Faroes (Vágatunnilin 2002 & Norðoyatunnilin 2006). The third one (Skálafjarðartunnilin) will open in 2020.
