By emphatically beating Montenegro 37–24 on Sunday, the Faroese delivered quite a stunning feat at the Men’s EHF Euro 2026 in Oslo, taking their first EHF Euro win ever while in the process getting fairly close to advancing to the main round of the tournament.
Wining the match was critical for the Faroese, should they retain a decent chance of advancing. And Sunday’s result was indeed a stunner that sent Montenegro reeling, an experienced team that has participated six times in the EHF Euro.
Already at half time, the trend was clear with a Faroese lead of 19–12.
The very sizable colony of Faroese spectators likely had a real impact, as duly noted after the match by Faroese players.
Man of the match, Faroese goal keeper Pauli Jacobsen was highly commended for his strong defense, with a 45-percent save rate.
Another bright star was Óli Mittún, who had 9 shots on goal and scored every time, pushing Montenegro’s defense to the limits. Likewise Hákun West av Teigum and Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu scored 9 goals each.
