Faroese minister: Arge and Skaale do not represent the Faroe Islands

Poul Michelsen, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, says there is no diplomatic crisis between Denmark and the Faroe Islands, Kvf.fo reports today.

The danish periodical Mandagmorgen has suggested that the Faroese urge for selfgovernment has provoked a diplomatic crisis between Denmark and the Faroe Islands, where Faroese self-interests contradict Danish principles on foreign affairs policies.

This comes after former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont was welcomed to the Danish Parliament last week by Faroese lawmaker Magni Arge who had invited him for an unofficial meeting with Danish lawmakers.

Magni Arge has also invited Puigdemont to come to the Faroe Islands this spring.

However, there is no diplomatic crisis between Denmark and the Faroe Islands, according to Poul Michelsen.

– The Faroese members of the Fólkating (the Danish parliament) do not represent the Faroe Islands. They are Danish politicians and thus the Catalonia-issue cannot become a diplomatic crisis between Denmark and the Faroe Islands, Michelsen told Kvf.fo.

There are two Faroese lawmakers in the Danish parliament: Magni Arge, who represents the Republican Party (Tjóðveldi), and Sjúrður Skaale, who represents the Social democrats (Javnaðarflokurin).
