Faroe receives IHF President’s Development Award

The Faroe Islands received the IHF President’s Development Award in December 2025 at the IHF Congress in Cairo, recognizing their significant growth in handball, highlighted by the women’s team qualifying for their first-ever IHF World Championship in 2025 and strong performances, showcasing the island nation’s dedication to spreading and developing the sport.

“The Faroe Islands are the smallest country in terms of population to ever win a medal at an IHF World Championship, as they finished third in the 2025 Men’s Junior (U21) World Championship,” the International Handball Federation noted, adding:

“They have continued their development after finishing seventh in the 2023 edition of the competition and eighth in the 2023 Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship.”

“Their women’s senior team qualified for the 2025 Women’s World Championship for the first time in history,” the IHF further stated.

“Teams from the Faroe Islands always bring many spectators with them to the various events.”

A month earlier, the IHF published a lengthy article on the history and achievements of the Faroese women’s handball team, entitled The Past, Present And Future: Faroe Islands Women Respecting, Representing And Making History With World Championship Debut.
