Faroe Prime Minister Johannesen calls snap election

Faroe Islands Prime Minister Aksel Johannesen has announced a general election to be held on March 26th, nine months ahead of schedule.

Prime Minister Johannesen made the announcement earlier today during a session at the Løgting, the Faroese parliament.

“Especially in the past few weeks, trust within the government coalition has basically been absent,” Mr. Johannesen noted.

“In conclusion I announce that in accordance with the Home Rule Law, section six, paragraph two, I have decided to call new parliamentary election to be held on Thursday March 26th, 2026.”

The announcement came moments after the Løgting had passed a bill approving the project planning of a subsea tunnel between Sandoy and Suðuroy; at the same time, it preempted a second vote on a highly controversial bill to raise the retirement age.

The current government coalition parties, Javnaðarflokkurin, Framsókn and Tjóðveldi have performed poorly in recent opinion polls, with support for opposition parties mostly increasing.
