Faroe beats Czechia 2 – 1 in stunning World Cup qualifier

The FIFA World Cup dream is still alive for the Faroe Islands men’s team after their sensational qualifier victory against the Czech Republic tonight.

No wonder the mood in the Faroes is euphoric with now three consecutive victories in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup.

Their underdog ranking compared to Czechia even further accentuates this.

All of tonight’s goals came in the second half of the match, with Hanus Sørensen putting the home team on the lead at 67 minutes. Eleven minutes on, the Czechs equalized with Adam Karabec scoring. Then a couple of minutes later, at 81 minutes, Martin Agnarsson got the ball in the back of the net, to the tune of thundering roars of the filled stadium. The excitement continued until the final whistle of the referee, then turned into a sea of celebrations.

The 2 – 1 victory over the Czechs at Tórshavn’s Tórsvøllur came on the heels of Thursday’s 4 – 0  rout over Montenegro, likewise at Tórsvøllur.

And just a month earlier, on the away fixture against Gibraltar, team Faroe won 1 – 0.

All of the above means the Faroese still have a theoretical chance of gaining a first-ever ticket to the FIFA World Cup tournament.

Below are the current positions of the Group L contestants.
1. Croatia: 13 points (5 matches)
2. Czech Republic: 13 points (7 matches)
3. Faroe Islands: 12 points (7 matches)
4. Montenegro: 6 points (6 matches)
5. Gibraltar: 0 points (5 matches)

The next and final qualifying fixture will be away against Croatia, on November 14th.
