As of January in the new year, 28-year old Elsa Berg will replace Heðin Mortensen as Mayor of Tórshavn, becoming the municipality of Tórshavn’s youngest mayor ever elected.
Ms. Berg received the most votes in Tórshavn at Tuesday’s municipal elections, surpassing the incumbent Heðin Mortensen, who came in second.
The 78-year old veteran, who has served as the Mayor of Tórshavn for 16 years (2005-2016, 2021-present), will hold the position of deputy mayor.
Not all municipal councils in the Faroes are having a change in leadership at this point, however. In Klaksvík, Karl Johansen was reelected as mayor, and Tórbjørn Jacobsen and Kristin Michelsen, mayors of Runavík and Tvøroyri, respectively, are poised to stay in office as well, likewise Dávur Juul, the mayor of Fuglafjørður.
