The parliament of the Faroe Islands, the Løgting, has passed a bill to extend by one year the residence permits of Ukrainians who have been granted temporary residence in the Faroes under a special act for displaced Ukrainians.
The temporary permits were originally set to expire on March 17th, 2024, however were later extended to last until March 2025. With the new bill passed, the permits have been extended to March 17th, 2026.
“The war [between Russia and Ukraine] is not likely to end soon… Thus it is the view of the Government of the Faroe Islands that the displaced Ukrainians ought to be given the opportunity to stay in the Faroes until March 17th, 2026,” the Ministry of Justice noted.
Under the special act, the Faroes can receive up to 250 displaced Ukrainians. As of November 2024, a total of 242 Ukrainians had been given temporary residence in the country, 138 of whom are women, 34 men, and 70 children. Of those 242, meanwhile, 49 have since left the Faroes, we are told.
