Description

Historic Prime Minister’s residence.

The rocky promotory of Tinganes on the foreshore of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, has been the home of the Faroese parliament for over a thousand years and is the oldest existing parliament in the world.

Initially the Parliament at Tinganes was a public assembly, or Alting, where all free men of the Faroe Islands could meet, discuss and decide on common matters.

From 1274 the parliament operated under Norwegian laws as well as administering specialist Faroese laws.

By 1816 it had been abolished completely and the Faroe Islands became a Danish county, ruled by a prefect and his civil servants. However, in 1852 it was re-established and it has continued to grow since then.

Today this iconic Faroese building still houses the sitting Prime Minister’s office and, fittingly, is the sight that first welcomes visitors to Tórshavn by sea, also the last wistful reminder as they leave for home.

Each product is handcrafted and comes with a title deed with a brief history of the building and certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
